How I do it
I use a variety of different techniques and tools which I have taken from counselling, coaching, NLP and hypnotherapy. Its why I say that I have an "integrative approach" - it means I can be flexible and adapt to what I think my client needs.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
NLP is about understanding how people organise and process their thoughts, the language patterns they use and the impact of these on their feelings and behaviours. It began as a study of how top people in different fields obtained outstanding results and how their thinking and behaviour patterns could be copied. The techniques used in NLP help people identify beliefs and thoughts that are limiting them in some way - the beliefs that are stopping them moving forward. Rather than focusing on where these beliefs came from, NLP techniques change or interrupt these thought patterns and create more helpful ones! Sounds easy heh? Well it can be - and quick too.
If you stop and take notice of some of things you tell yourself during your day you may realise that some of these thoughts are useful and some maybe not be so useful. For example think about getting up in the morning and looking in the mirror. What are you saying to yourself when you see your face staring back at you? What you say internally will then affect your mood, how you interact and communicate with others and how they in turn treat you. It doesn't always feel like it but we can learn to control our internal voice - NLP techniques help us to do that in a positive way. Once you decide what you want for your life NLP strategies can help you remove what's in the way - WARNING - it may be you!
I have used NLP to cure people of phobias and fears and to treat anxiety, sleep problems, weight loss and confidence issues to name a few. Many top athletes and coaches use NLP techniques to create the right mental state for peak performance. If you can learn to control your mind then you can influence the results you get in sport and in life.
"If you keep doing the same thing, then you will keep getting the same results"
Hypnosis has long been thought of as a strange and mysterious phenomenon, but the truth is there is nothing mysterious about it.
We have all been in a hypnotic state – it can happen on a daily basis. Ever been driving and reached your destination with no recollection of how you got there? You've been on auto-pilot and have been using your unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is where we store all of what we have learned, our memories and our beliefs. It also operates and maintains our bodily functions – the things we do without even thinking about it. Our conscious mind appraises situations and makes decisions. These decisions are based on our beliefs and previous experiences – those things that are stored in our unconscious. The hypnotic state just allows us to reach that part of our brain that we are not always aware of.
A therapist uses the power of positive suggestion to bring about change to our thoughts, feelings and behaviour. The relaxed state that hypnosis provides means that the conscious part of the brain can be quieted. At the same time the unconscious mind can be stimulated and made to focus on more helpful beliefs or approaches to problems. This in turn will help you change your behaviour. For example, let’s say you had a fear of butterflies. Your conscious mind might know that butterflies can’t hurt you and that there is nothing to really be afraid of, but no amount of convincing makes any difference. This is because the root cause of your fear will have been pushed into the unconscious. You need to find that root fear or you won’t get anywhere. Progress can only be made by reprogramming the unconscious so you can get rid of or change your deep-seated instincts and beliefs that are holding you back.
As you can imagine there are lots of memories in our unconscious minds some of which we may not want to be reminded of. People often ask if these things will re-surface unexpectedly - the answer to this is the unconscious mind serves to protect us - you will not have to deal with anything that you are are not ready to face. You will simple not remember unless you want to.
